On these windows fitted in the early sixties by my Father the original putty is now beginning to crack and fall away.
One solution for this is to replace the existing putty with Dryseal, an elastic glazing sealant specially developed for easy application for maintenance of windows and doors which were previously putty glazed.
It has outstanding durability and is normally set to allow overpainting after approximately 48 hours.
